Definition Of Bullying

    The definition of bullying, which is also known as bullying, is unwanted aggressive behavior between children (especially school age), which involves an imbalance of power between the perpetrator and the victim. An act that can be categorized as bullying is very aggressive behavior and includes:

1. Power imbalance between children who bully, whether in the form of physical, access to information on things that embarrass the victim, or have popularity that is able to control and endanger the victim

2. The bullying was repeated or it happened more than once.

3. Some actions are also included in bullying, actions that can harm other children, including rumors of harming the victim, carrying out physical or verbal attacks, and also deliberately isolating a child from a group.

The difference between bullying and joking

   There are times when bullying and joking are indistinguishable because they can be fun or prank on a child who is a victim. However, there is a very clear line between bullying and joking.

Joking is done by children as a way of communication and a form of social interaction. Joking can strengthen friendships between children because they can laugh together and become closer. In fact, some forms of joking may only work with children who are close friends.

Meanwhile, a striking difference in the meaning of bullying from jokes is the purpose of the perpetrator who bullies because of feelings of hatred and intentions to hurt. The purpose of bullying is not to build a relationship, but to humiliate and hurt the victim so that the perpetrator feels greater.

However, it should be noted that even if joking does not have a bad initial purpose, it is funny for one child, perhaps unpleasant for another. When unpleasant jokes are repeated and hurt other children, joking can turn into bullying.

The impact of bullying on children

   Bullying has far-reaching effects. Apart from the children who are victims, the negative impacts can also be felt by the bullies and those who witness the bullying. Bullying has been linked to many negative impacts on child development, including mental health disorders, drug use, depression and suicide.

1. For children who are victims of bullying

Child victims of bullying can experience physical, social, emotional, mental health problems as well as academic problems. They may also experience symptoms, such as depression, anxiety, increased feelings of sadness, changes in sleeping and eating patterns, and loss of interest in daily activities.

It is not uncommon for victims of bullying to retaliate very cruelly. These children's problems can also persist into adulthood.

2. For children who are bullies

Child bullies can engage in violent and other risky behavior, which can carry over into adulthood. They will tend to be aggressive and get involved in the abuse of alcohol, drugs, committing acts of harassment, vandalism, and even committing criminal acts as adults.

3. For children who witness bullying

Children who witness bullying may experience increased use of tobacco, alcohol or drugs, have mental health problems, including depression and anxiety and skip school

Examples of cases of bullying

Lee Hyunjoo, a former APRIL member, is being talked about by the public and their fans regarding the issue of being a victim of bullying. It started with an upload from a netizen who claimed to be Hyunjoo's younger brother, who said that his brother was bullied while he was a member of APRIL.

In the long upload, he mentioned that his brother left the APRIL group because he was bullied by APRIL personnel. 

"My sister is said to have left APRIL because of her focus on acting career but that is not true because she was harassed and bullied in the group to the point that she had difficulty breathing due to panic attacks and attempted suicide," 

wrote the source's post. Ahead of Hyunjoo's departure, his younger brother said the DSP Media agency sent a letter saying that Hyunjoo left the group to focus on acting. 

"After the letter, my brother was described as a person who betrayed his group for his own gain and became a victim of malicious comments. He also did not get an apology from APRIL personnel. They even laughed when they saw our mother come to the agency," said the source's post. confessed to Hyunjoo's brother. 

Friend's Testimony 

Following Hyunjoo's younger brother's report, a netizen uploaded another article claiming to be Hyunjoo's ex-APRIL friend. 

"This is a friend of former APRIL personnel and actress Lee Hyunjoo, he is my high school friend and we are still in touch. All APRIL personnel are bullying Hyunjoo except Chaekyung and Rachel because they just joined," said Hyunjoo's friend.

"After Hyunjoo tried to kill himself, the agency said the members had self-reflection and their mother came to the agency to meet. Unfortunately the members ignored her and laughed at each other," she continued. 

Agency Statement 

Following an issue that spread in the public, the DSP Media agency made an official statement. In his statement, the agency said that Hyunjoo had long wanted to be an actress but instead debuted as a member of APRIL. 

"First, we will say in detail about Lee Hyunjoo's departure from APRIL. Lee Hyunjoo joined as a trainee for acting, but when we formed APRIL, Lee Hyunjoo and his family together we agreed to join the team," read the statement. 

It was also stated that Hyunjoo could not regularly participate due to physical and psychological problems and intended to leave the group during the promotion of the song 'Tinkerbell'. 

"Not only is Lee Hyunjoo facing tangible and non-existent losses because of this split, other members also experienced it because everyone feels difficult and suffering because they can't be sure who is the victim and the perpetrator at this time," he explained. 

DSP Media's agency also said that it would fully support the acting career that Hyunjoo APRIL wanted and appealed to everyone not to make rumors about Hyunjoo that the truth could not be found.
